Poplar Patio Furniture

Yellow poplar trees grow taller than any other US hardwood species and they are members of the magnolia family. Poplar lumber is being used more often in furniture construction. Poplar is less expensive than cedar or redwood but is just as strong. Poplar has a smoother grain surface than pine, redwood or cedar making it an excellent choice for painting. Poplar is not as water and disease resistant as cedar or redwood however. We offer the poplar furniture as an alternative the more expensive cedar and redwood because of the cost.

Does not warp as much as other wood. This means the boards will not dis form because of warping from sun and water as much as other woods. Poplar does not absorb water as other woods can.

Holds and maintains stain - Poplar patio furniture holds and maintains stains and finishes better the most other woods. Poplar has a smother grain that allows the stains and finishes to bond to the wood more effectively.

Poplar has unique yellow/white color - The color of Poplar lumber can vary depending on where the Poplar originated from.

Pine Patio Furniture Construction

There are many ways to create pine patio furniture. Most of the pieces made oversees (china ) tend to be lower quality with lower construction stantards. Many smaller and midsize companies in the US us high quality construction standards like the ones listed below. When looking for pine patio furniture, try to find products that have simliar standards to these.

Good pine patio furniture is fastened using screws, carriage bolts, tonque and grove or mortise and tenon joints for strength and durability. Our furniture will outlast all commercial, mass produced patio furniture that is simply stapled and glued. The joints are not nearly as strong and will break over time.

We also use zinc plated, stainless steel or treated hardware that will not rust and last the life of the furniture.

Good patio furniture uses wood that is either air dried or kiln dried to prevent warpage and other deformations of the wood due to moisture.

We only use pine that is grown on plantations and tree farms. We do not use any old growth pine in order to preserve our environment. This strategy will ensure that there is enough pine for future generations. It is important that we preserve our forrest from over harvesting by only using renewable plantation grown trees.

Pine Patio Furniture Care

Most products are shipped with a natural finish. This natural finish is a sanded surface that has a light oil finish to accent the woods beauty and luster. If the furniture is left outside without any other treatments, it will turn a silver grey over time and the wood grain will raise slightly.

If prefer to finish your furniture, here are some examples of other types of finishes that we recommend. Some of these finishes
require annual maintenance and some require re-finishing after a few years.

Wood Sealer - A wood sealer is designed to prevent any moisture and dirt from getting into the pores of the wood. This prevents
wood grain from raising but allows the natural weathering process to continue. The patio furniture will turn a silver grey over time.

Stain - A wood stain is useful if you want to preserve the color and smoothness of the furniture. By applying a stain, the color and texture of the wood is preserved. The stain must be re-applied after a specified time. Please consult the products direction concerning how often to re-apply the wood stain.

Oil - A high quality wood oil can be applied to the furniture as well. This will preserve the woods color and texture just like a stain but will not protect against the wood from turning a silver grey over time. Some of our furniture is shipped with a light oil finish.

Paint - Redwood and other wood species can be painted. The paint however may blister and peel over time. We recommend poplar or other treated woods for painting. These wood species accept a painted finish better than cedar, redwood and teak.

Treated - Redwood can be treated like most other woods. Redwood should be treated if it will be in contact with the dirt for prolonged periods of time.

Pine Patio Furniture

Pine trees are found throughout the US. There are numerous types of pine trees that can produce furniture grade lumber. Lumber from pine trees is the most widely available and regulated type of lumber currently available. Pine is a softwood that absorbs water readily and splits easily. Our pine lumber is pressure treated before and after being kiln dried. Pine is not as hard or decay/insect resistant as cedar or redwood but is less expensive. The pressure treated pine is ideal for painting.

Does not warp or bend - the lumber used in our pine furniture is treated to resist warping and bending.

Resists decay, disease and rotting - The pressure treating process makes the pine very decay and insect resistant.

Treated pine is ideal for painting. The treated pine does not absorb water and therefore the grain will not raise as other
pine furniture.

Cedar Patio Furniture

Important Facts about Cedar and why it is a good choice for outdoor patio furniture.

Resists decay, disease and rotting - Cedar has natural oils and compounds that resist humidity and natural occuring decay.
Cedar has one of the highest US Forest Products ratings for disease and decay resistance. These oils and natural occuring compounds make cedar and excellent choice for outdoor furniture in humid areas of the country. It is also
useful around pool and sauna locations.

Cedar furniture has a fresh sent that last a long time after
harvest ( only unfinished products )

Cedar contains oils that are a natural insect repellent

Does not crack as much as other woods. Cedar does not absorb water or loose water as fast as other woods like Oak.
